This is the DJ Babe email that was circulating after Super Bowl XL. Babe phoned in the Needle 9:14 show to explain his displeasure last night. Read the email below.
Disclaimer:
Before reading this editorial, please note that my views are strictly based on the business dealings with certain individuals – not personal – unless I say it’s personal. Please be aware that my rant only comes from long held frustration and in no way do I claim that my point of view is the end all method. I know that with the release of this document that I will be dissed, hated on, blackballed and may even have to straight up fisticuff a few people… but I’m only doing this because conversation is needed and someone has to start talking.
I Quit Detroit….
That’s right, no longer do I want to claim this area, rep this city, bend over to make it shine. For far too long this city has been shitted on, diss and pissed on. Why? Part of the reason is because we let it happen. Many people always looked at me as the guy who doesn’t deal with local rappers, the unsupportive DJ, the DJ who won’t play any local music in the clubs and on mixtapes. That’s about 60% right. Part of that is I’m fed up with the music scene. I’m fed up with niggaz still holding on to Motown, people just like 2Pac is really dead – so is Motown in Detroit. I’m fed up with Kill-A-Nigga Records, We Sell Dope Ent., Crazy Nigga Productions and so forth. I’m tired of niggaz buying a CD burner and Photo Shop and saying “we got a label!!” I’m tired of the useless open mic scene, where rappers are only rapping for other rappers. I’m tired of the artist who have been able to get recording deals do dumb shit, release bullshit albums or do absolutely nothing to uplift the movement here. I’m tired of people coming into Detroit, making a gang of money off of us then leaving us with nothing to show for it. Hey, that brings up the past weekend during Super Bowl! Here’s where it gets grimy. It’s damn shame that the only muthafuckaz smiling right now are a handful of white (maybe a circle of black) promoters and the artist that came through Detroit and got rich. It’s a damn shame that come this weekend it’s back to the same bullshit that we were doing only a mere 2 weeks ago. Where was the effect that was supposed to uplift us? Let’s see – let me say this and all of my New York friends don’t bust a vein over this one. How in the f*** did Detroit open its asshole and get f***ed by Biz Markie? I’m not mad at Biz, I’m mad at the promoters who wanna negotiate a price for us “local” DJs to open for him but give up ya granny and ya left nut to pay him to play absolutely horrible at ya parties. If a promoter ever tries to bargain with me over a price and they paying Biz top dollar to play like he’s blindfolded, I’m slapping the good-googilly-goo outta somebody. Biz – I don’t know if he was being funny but that was the worst shit I ever heard. f*** it, I said it….
I’m mad at the promoters who thought they could throw a party and charge $300 to get in. Nigga this is Detroit, niggaz here ain’t paying that shit! I need to check the county morgue for the numbers of suicides cuz I know a few niggaz jumped off the Belle Isle Bridge from taking an “L” on their parties. Man.. niggaz lost like crazy!! (here’s where I start more shit) wazzup on the promoter who tried to do 3 nights at Clutch Cargo and other places and now is being sued for breach of contract? Nigga, don’t forget U owe my boy $800. Shit, if I wanna get real U owe me $250 for not having the Sunday gig! What about the promoter who took 3 days to pay me $125?!?!?! Damn, everybody else fell through Detroit, got rich and said see ya later suckas!!!! Guess what? Detroit is back to where it was in the first place. Sad.
What’s even sadder is that the people here who are supposed to hold the weight were M.I.A. that weekend. Where were the so-called heavy hitter DJs? Why weren’t there events thrown by the shot callers if niggaz got so much juice? Why were the radio DJs silent that weekend? Hmm… wazzup with our 2 record pools getting together and throwing something major?? Why did we get f***ed – again?!?!?!?! With the exception of Trick Trick doing a party, where was the parties thrown by D12, Obie, Slum Village, Eminem? That Shady Bowl party don’t count homie. I’m talking about hands on from our people. Proof tried, didn’t work.. sure wish The ‘Pac woulda had their party (hint hint). Only good thing about the Shady Bowl was that Tommy Lee (from the group Metallica and the Pamela Anderson porn vids) got his ass whooped for dissing Kid Rock and Detroit – at a f***in Shady party. That was real dumb Tommy, heard he had a busted lip. See, we just don’t f*** up rappers – rockers can get it too. Speaking of Kid Rock – that’s the muthafucka who put up his sleeves and represented Detroit strong last weekend. Rappers take note of this guy.
So let me run it down.. Friday I was supposed to provide the sounds for Nick Cannon as he discussed his new youth foundation. Nick missed his flight so with the event scheduled to end at 2pm, he showed up at 2:30. Oh, did I tell you I wasn’t paid then. Next I was scheduled to do 3 hours at the Unplugged party with Kanye, John Legend, Fugees, Slum Village, Goapele & Dwele. Well, Kanye & his boy toy Johnnie did 1 song, Dwele was a no-show, only T3 from Slum Vill came and what was supposed to be The Fugees turned into a show by the nigga we don’t wanna see – Pras. I was supposed to then leave and DJ at a party for Uncle Luke but the 2nd DJ never showed up and I was stuck at the first party. Damn, I missed the 4 naked chicks. Saturday I set up the sounds to do a Nick Cannon Wilding Out party, ran downtown to set up for an Ebony magazine party ran back to Nick’s event and ran out of gas less than 1 mile away. After being pushed to a gas station and f***ing up my bumper, I got to Nick’s party. It was aiight.. did I mention I wasn’t paid right then? I then ran straight downtown for the Ebony party. After walking in the building with my mixer, I was manhandled and had a bomb sniffing dog lick the shit outta me. I entered the party and they had me set up damn near by the bathroom. I had to f***in DJ a prestigious party next to niggaz taking a shit. Sunday I was set to DJ this party for Usher but that promoter mentioned earlier dipped out on niggaz and was ghost.
f*** it, I’m glad it’s over. But at the same time, I quit as well. From now, I’m from Alaska. Honestly I am from Pittsburgh tho… not just dickriding cuz they won – I am from Pittsburgh and this is one of the few times I can say it proudly. Few… so until the scene gets elevated I’m out. I don’t wanna hear that, U a part of the problem not the solution. Yup, U goddamn right. I ain’t tryin to save the city.
