THE HIP HOP WORLD RELIEF SHOWCASE

Windsor, ON- This event will bring local Windsor and Detroit Hip Hop & R&B artists together to perform for a world relief fundraiser in Windsor on June 5th at Club Live. All proceeds of this event will benefit World Vision Canada, to help fight hunger & poverty, and to educate kids & teens in Africa and other countries on HIV/Aids. With the support of Windsor and Detroit’s residents and local media, the event will be a success.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is cutting across communities and leaving behind orphaned children, widows and people with bodies weakened by the disease. According to Stephen Lewis, UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS, the disease will be more devastating than the bubonic plague of the 14th century. AIDS is considered the number one cause of death in a number of African countries. UNICEF calls it the greatest catastrophe to ever hit Africa. For many nations, poverty means having not nearly enough money to fund health care, limping along with dilapidated equipment and a crumbling system, struggling to find the means to build schools and train and pay teachers, and dealing with massive unemployment. These conditions contribute to the IV/AIDS crisis. Recent studies have shown that families in which at least one parent is HIV-positive experience a education in household income by 40 per cent on average. People at all income levels suffer from HIV/AIDS, but the poor are the hardest hit. In some countries, the number of people living in poverty is expected to rise by five per cent due to HIV/AIDS.

Every 3 seconds a child dies from poverty related causes.

30,000 children die each day from disease, hunger, unclean water and other poverty related causes. More than one billion people in the world live on less than one dollar a day. Another 2.7 billion struggle to survive on less than two dollars per day. Poverty in the developing world, however, goes far beyond income poverty. It means having to walk more than one mile, everyday simply to collect water and firewood; it means suffering diseases that were eradicated from rich countries decades ago. Every year eleven million children die—most under the age of five and more than six million from completely preventable causes like malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia.
In some deeply impoverished nations less than half of the children are in primary school and fewer than 20 percent go to secondary school. Around the world, a total of 114 million children do not get even a basic education and 584 million women are illiterate. Following are basic facts outlining the roots and manifestations of the poverty affecting more than one third of our world.
