Ok let me help you. Lets assume you have 10,000 fans. You release a mix tape and half of them bought the CD version. You sell them for $10. It costs $5,000 for recording/manufacturing/design/sound engineering/and distribution etc. expenses(have to do it right you know) that would mean.

$10ea. x 5,000sold = $50,000 in your pocket minus expenses
$50,000-$5,000expenses = $45,000

Thats good money. My recommendation then would be to plan to expand your brand "You" by investing in your business.

1. Buy more CDs apparently people like the product of you sell that many. Expenses would be less because everything was paid for in the last batch, so your profit will be higher with the next 5,000 sales

2.Get good studio equipment and start planning your own studio. That way you can control how much you produce and you won't have to worry about not having access to good equipment. Plus you can record when you feel like it.

3. Improve the website or get one started. Market, then promote. In that order!

4. Get some volunteers to help build your brand. pay them for good work. Keep the best of them and get rid of the rest.

5. If you sell 10,000(the second batch of 5,000) what ever you did is hittin, shoot a video, learn the system and get some airplay. If you sold 10,000 you can sell 40,000 or better with a video.

another 5,000 sold x $7.00 profit per unit = $35,000. That's a total of $80,000.

Don't get silly and buy an expensive ride. Reinvest first bring more money into the camp for product. There will be lots more money to buy homes and better cars that way.

As for getting rid of the CDs. Target 5 cities to sell 1,000 CDs in each city. That way you continue to make new fans, and you don't over saturate your own underground market. Then do it again.

I hope this helps!

Thank You, Thats very usefully information, what I was sorta planning followed those points pretty well, im glad to c other ppl think this is good
1) I was thinkin that too, 10$ a cd, sell 5 make about 40k, (i been lookin around, if I spend the 300$ to travel 4 a week I can record n get my cds for cheaper, n the other money 4 the footwork, n ppl I pay for help, n of course stupid govt taxes) lets say I clear 35k on 5k cds, more cds I buy cheaper they become, n if Things, r good, it keeps getting cheaper.
2) my Boy got a small 2brm cottage out on the lake in the county, hes Moving there Soon the one bedroom will be created into a studio by us over time (the lakehouse on the beach, in the backyard is a great relaxing area quiet, good 4 makin music)
3,4&5) marketing, promotion and brand distinguising are very important to create a name n steady base.
n not Much need 4 a ride if im out on the road (most major cities have buses lol)(def. getting a lac for 5k tho, great car 4 road trips, n my dream car Any lac) it takes money to make money like stretch says, reinvesment is a key to growth, like not just in music, moeny in a investment firm, stocks, trust fund ect ya know im thinkin long run.

anyways Thats all fRom my own thoughts over time. I been meaning to go to chapters get a good business book Any suggestions? thanks for the input tho bro.

Just here to help

check out "E-Myth" by Michael Gerber.

It's not about music, just business told in a story format so it's pretty easy to follow but the lessons are incredible. Most successful business people I know operate on the principals from this book. It's also available in audio format if you prefer to listen.

Go to chapters and read a few chapters...you'll get into it! Promise

Then get "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership" by John C Maxwell

This book will help you understand those that lead and those that follow. Also great for building a business.

I just wanna say that the last time I checked, this forum was for discussion....as in talking about things that are on your mind etc....Many times Ambassador has let us know that we should feel comfortable to speak our minds about ANYTHING.....with this being said...who is anyone else to say what people should start discussions about? that's all.....

That's right, and we will maintain the tradition.

I don't hear of too many hip hop artists reading books that advance themselves, so congratulations on working to advance your understanding on a deeper level.
Let me know how you progress through books I'd like to discuss what you're learn.

Dr Michael Eric Dyson holds down the west side of detroit, and has an older brotha in prison i believe on a murder charge that is in question.

This is one black man that i admire, and respect,he's now a professor at yale, formerly at Penn.

Come and watch this video/interview Soledad O'Brien did with Dr Dyson, and his brother everett.
